چکیده

Both members of the diploid–tetraploid species pair Anthericum ramosum L. and Anthericum liliago L. occur as geographically disjunct isolates on the margins of their northern range in Scandinavia. Variation in floral morphology was studied in 33 populations of A. ramosum from four geographic regions and 25 populations of A. liliago from seven regions in Scandinavia. Tepal shape was characterized with the help of moment invariants, and intraand interspecific variation in style and filament length was investigated. There were significant between-region and betweenpopulation differences in tepal shape and style and filament length within both species. However, despite the geographic disjunction of both species’ distributions, there was considerable overlap in tepal shape between populations from the different regions. The hierarchical partitioning of tepal shape diversity was similar in the two species. Most of the total diversity was explained by regional and interpopulation components of diversity (48% and 35%, respectively, in A. ramosum and 61% and 22%, respectively, in A. liliago). The two species were clearly discriminated on the basis of tepal shape and style and outer filament lengths. A southern Swedish population, containing triploid hybrids between A. ramosum and A. liliago, was indistinguishable from other Scandinavian populations of A. liliago on the basis of tepal shape. However, a (allegedly hybrid) Danish population of A. liliago was intermediate between the two species in

Comparative Population Dynamics of Two Closely Related Species Differing in Ploidy Level

BACKGROUND Many studies compare the population dynamics of single species within multiple habitat types, while much less is known about the differences in population dynamics in closely related species in the same habitat. Additionally, comparisons of the effect of habitat types and species are largely missing. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We estimated the importance of the habitat type...

Conditions in Home and Transplant Soils Have Differential Effects on the Performance of Diploid and Allotetraploid Anthericum Species

Due to increased levels of heterozygosity, polyploids are expected to have a greater ability to adapt to different environments than their diploid ancestors. While this theoretical pattern has been suggested repeatedly, studies comparing adaptability to changing conditions in diploids and polyploids are rare. The aim of the study was to determine the importance of environmental conditions of or...

Morpho-phenology and chromosome number of Iranian Bromus danthoniae Trin. genotypes

ABSTRACT- Bromus danthoniae Trin. is an annual grass species which grows mainly on dry grassy rocky mountain slopes and grassy steppe, and is grazed by many herbivores and recognized as a useful pasture plant. The chromosome number, morphological and anatomical traits of 82 genotypes of B. danthoniae belonging to three sub-taxa were investigated. Twenty-seven quantitative and 20 qualitative mor...

MEIOTIC STUDIES OF SOME AVENA SPECIES AND POPULATIONS IN IRAN

Eleven populations of five Avena species were analysed for meiotic characters including chiasma frequency and distribution as well as chromosomal association and segregation. Plants of a single population of A. eriantha showed the presence of 2n = 14 (diploid) and 2n = 4x = 28 chromosome number. Populations of A. barbata and A. wiestii possessed n = 14, while populations of A. sterilis ssp. lud...

Effects of mowing and removing litter on reproductive shoot modules of some plant species in abandoned meadows of Monte San Giorgio

Stampfli A. 1992. Effects of mowing and removing litter on reproductive shoot modules of some plant species in abandoned meadows on Monte San Giorgio. Bot. Helv. 102: 85-92. Reproductive shoot modules have been counted in a permanent plot experiment on Monte San Giorgio (Southern Switzerland) since 1988. The 8 species presented here, including the dominant grass (Molinia arundinacea) and seven ...
